Drywall Repair in Toronto: DIY vs. Hiring a Pro (Honest Guide)

Small nail hole or major drywall damage? Learn when to DIY drywall repair and when to hire a professional in Toronto — with real cost estimates.

Drywall damage is one of the most common home repair requests in Toronto — and one of the most varied. A tiny nail hole from a removed picture frame is completely different from a fist-sized hole from a doorknob or a water-damaged section that needs full replacement.

Here's an honest guide to help you decide: tackle it yourself, or call someone?

Types of Drywall Damage (and Their Complexity)

Small holes (under 3/4")

Nail holes, small screw holes, minor dings. These are genuinely easy to DIY with a tube of lightweight spackle, a putty knife, and some sandpaper. Cost of materials: under $15.

Medium holes (3/4" to 4")

Often from doorknobs, small anchors that pulled out, or minor accidents. These require a patch — either a self-adhesive mesh patch or a California patch technique. Doable DIY for someone reasonably handy. Takes 2–3 coats of joint compound with drying time between each.

Large holes (4"+)

Requires a proper backing — either a drywall clip, wood backing, or a full stud-to-stud replacement piece. More complex to feather and blend. Matching existing texture (orange peel, knockdown, smooth) adds significant difficulty.

Water damage

Never just patch over water-damaged drywall. The source must be fixed first (always), and the damaged section removed before patching. Wet drywall can harbour mould. This is a job for a professional.

Cracks

Hairline cracks near corners or along taped seams are often structural settling — usually cosmetic but worth monitoring. Wide cracks (over 1/4") or cracks that keep coming back need proper diagnosis before patching.

The Texture Problem

This is where most DIY drywall repairs fall apart: matching the existing texture.

Toronto homes have many different textures applied over the decades:

  • Smooth (newer condos, higher-end finishes) — easiest to match
  • Orange peel (light spray texture) — requires a hopper gun or aerosol knockdown can
  • Knockdown (heavier, random pattern) — requires a trowel and practice
  • Popcorn ceiling (older homes) — contains asbestos in pre-1980 construction; do not disturb without testing

Getting the texture right requires the right tools and experience. A patch that's been perfectly filled but has the wrong texture will still be visible after painting.

DIY Drywall Repair: What You Need

For small to medium holes:

Materials:

  • Lightweight joint compound (not all-purpose — it shrinks more)
  • Self-adhesive mesh patch (for holes over 3/4")
  • Sandpaper (120 grit, then 220 grit)
  • Primer
  • Matching paint (if you have it — getting a perfect paint match is its own challenge)

Tools:

  • Putty knife or drywall knife (4–6" wide)
  • Sanding block
  • Possibly: hopper gun or aerosol texture for texture matching

Time:

  • Actual work time: 30–60 minutes
  • Total time: 24–48 hours (waiting for compound to dry between coats)

Professional Drywall Repair: Typical Costs in Toronto

| Job Type | Typical Cost | |---------|-------------| | Small holes (nail/screw) — per visit | $80–$120 | | Medium patch (up to 4") | $100–$180 | | Large patch (6–12") | $150–$250 | | Multiple holes (same visit) | $150–$300 | | Water damage repair (section) | $250–$500+ | | Full wall repair + texture match | $300–$600+ |

These costs include materials, labour, texture matching, and usually a prime coat. Paint matching is typically extra (or you supply the paint).

When to Call a Professional

  • Holes larger than 4" in diameter
  • Any water damage (fix the source first, then call for repair)
  • Texture matching on anything more than a smooth finish
  • Multiple repairs in the same room (painting the whole room evenly after patches)
  • Cracks wider than 1/4" or recurring cracks
  • Pre-sale repairs where quality needs to be high
